The perfect lives of a beauty queen and her college football star husband are shattered by an act of terrorism their daughter commits in protest to the Vietnam War.

A pastoral ought to present an idealised version of country life. This movie version is less than ideal, the director has failed the author in bringing the book to the screen, no easy task particularly when working with such an elaborate, nuanced tome. Solid entertainment, but lacking in continuity of theme and probably leaving movie viewers who have not read the book a bit puzzled. American demented.
