"Animals" is one of those efforts which explores big societal themes through the simplicity of everyday goings-on. It's easy to mistake it for being about nothing when really it's about everything. The film is crafted around a long-standing friendship between two women, exploring the inevitability of growing up while not wanting to give up personal freedoms or conform to societal expectations. Life can be about finding yourself, but it seems losing yourself, or simply getting lost, has more truth. Wine not.
