Colette

After marrying Willy, a successful Parisian writer, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette starts ghostwriting for him and the couple become the toast of Paris in the 1920s.

The actor in the titular role delivers a memorable portrayal of the infamous woman who was variously a mime, actor, journalist and novelist, but first and foremost a feminist. The sets are sumptuous and the costumes spectacular, all doing credit to the interesting life of this ferociously independent woman. "Colette" touches on the bawdy and reveals some interesting relationships while remaining melodrama-free, a feat which takes it beyond being just another period drama. Oh la la.
