33 AD in the Holy Land, a young woman defies her father's wishes for her to marry and instead joins the followers of Jesus of Nazareth.

The biblical story of the crucifixion has been told on film before, but rarely, if ever, from the perspective of the woman recognised as the apostle of the apostles. The story, while faithful to the biblical text, quite deliberately upends the entrenched patriarchal view of the role of the titular character. "Mary Magdalene", if it errs, errs on the side of simplicity as well-cast players enact a nuanced drama with appropriate solemnity. Everything's alright.
