Mrs Lowry and Son

L. S. Lowry is a renowned English painter whose ambitions were held back by an excessive reliance on his mother's approval.

This was an artist who drew his inspiration from the bleakest of places, seeing the beauty in everything. The movie maintains a similarly sombre tone, with the focus being held on the uncomfortably codependent relationship between mother and son. The action - what shuffling movement there is - happens almost entirely at the bedside of the invalid parent. The production is held tightly by the accomplished actors, and interest is maintained by a narrative firmly entrenched in the tyrannical class system. Son of a mum.
